The development of the city of St Petersburg started out from this fortress, dedicated to St Peter and St Paul, situated on a small island in the Neva delta. When Domenico Trezzini took over the building of the fortress in 1706, he had to replace the extant mud creation with a solid construction. He supervised the work on the fortress, the concept and hexagonal ground plan of which were guided by the fortification system developed by the French military engineer Sebastien Le Prestre Vauban (1633-1707). Trezzini acquired his knowledge of fortress construction during a period in Denmark when he worked for the team of the Ticino military architect Domenico Pelli. Before he worked for the Danish crown, Pelli had worked with Vauban in Strasbourg. The Danish (?) engineer Marcus Heinsohn, who came to Russia in the same team as Trezzini, was probably also involved in the planning of the installation, especially in the area of military strategy.
